Policy-Based Data Protection

Policy-Based Data Protection eliminates the need to manually track new VMs or changes in your infrastructure. Once a policy is created, all VMs that match the defined criteria are automatically included in data protection jobs. When a VM’s status changes, the policy detects the change and adds or removes the VM from jobs accordingly. This feature is designed to reduce complexity and increase flexibility for data protection processes such as backup, replication, and backup copy.

You can define policies based on VM name, tags, size, location, configuration, power state, or any combination of these parameters. Newly created VMs or instances that match the policy rules are automatically added to data protection jobs, eliminating the need for manual intervention. As your environment grows, you can add as many VMs and instances as needed, and NAKIVO Backup & Replication will automatically back up all matching workloads as long as policy-based jobs are in place.

Policy-Based Data Protection is especially valuable for rapidly expanding or complex virtualized environments that include large numbers of VMs or instances. The feature significantly improves the overall usability of NAKIVO Backup & Replication by simplifying ongoing data protection management.

Policies can be created for VM backup, replication, and backup copy jobs in just a few steps. You simply define the selection criteria, such as VM name, size, or tag, and all matching items are automatically included in the job. For example, you can configure a policy to back up all VMware VMs tagged Accounting that exceed 100 GB in size and have more than 2 GB of allocated RAM. Once the policy is in place, NAKIVO Backup & Replication automatically detects newly added VMs or instances with the same characteristics and includes them in the existing job.
