File Recovery: Cannot Open Disk

Problem

A virtual disk cannot be opened during file recovery. The following error message is displayed:

Cannot open this disk.

Transporter assigned to the Backup Repository could not find contents on this disk.

Background

This error message can be caused by the following reasons:

• The disk cannot be mounted to the Transporter.

• The disk contains a proprietary partition table.

• The disk is encrypted.

• The disk is part of RAID.

• The disk is part of a Linux LVM structure.

Solution

To resolve this issue, follow the steps below:

1. Make sure that the Transporter assigned to the Backup Repository has an iSCSI initiator installed and enabled.

2. Make sure that the Transporter assigned to the Backup Repository does not have active iSCSI mounts.

3. Make sure that the original disk:

   1. is not encrypted

   2. is not part of a RAID structure

   3. has a standard partition table (MBR or GPT)

4. If the disk is a Linux LVM disk:

   1. If you are using a Linux-based Transporter:

      1. Find the “Logical volumes” item in the tree in Step 2 of the File Recovery Wizard.

      2. Click the item and browse the content of logical volumes disks directly.

   2. If you are using a Windows-based Transporter:

      1. Install a Linux-based Transporter or deploy a virtual appliance with a Transporter.

      2. Add the new Transporter to the Configuration.

      3. Edit your Backup Repository and specify the newly assigned Transporter.

      4. Try to recover the files again.
