SAN Transport Mode Cannot Be Started

Product version: 7.0
Last modified: 14 March 2017

Problem

When processing a backup, replication, or recovery job the following message is displayed:

Backup / Replication / Recovery / Flash boot / Screenshot verification of the VM_NAME VM cannot be started

SAN transport mode cannot be used by the Transporter to access one or more disks of this VM.

Background

This error occurs if you are using VVol or vSAN datastores. The reason is a known issue in the VDDK library, which is used for managing and accessing VMware virtual disks. The issue will be fixed in one of the upcoming releases.

Solution

The temporary workarounds are:

  • Explicitly specify another mode, such as NBDSSL or HotAdd

  • Move the virtual disk to a VMFS datastore.
