Question

What is the most cost-effective retention policy for backing up to Wasabi?

Answer

According to Wasabi’s Pricing FAQs, the optimal storage retention policy for Wasabi Hot Cloud Storage is as follows:

  • more than 90 days (default) for Wasabi’s pay-as-you-go pricing model

  • more than 30 days for customers using Wasabi’s RCS pricing model

Therefore, the most cost-effective retention policy for users of Wasabi’s pay-as-you-go pricing model is  "Keep one recovery point per day for 91 days”.  For users of Wasabi’s RCS pricing model - “Keep one recovery point per day for 31 days”.

Also, if all backups in your Wasabi repository have the same retention policy, it's recommended to set the Delete and re-create the repository on attach feature according to your retention policy. This feature helps avoid the increase in the Wasabi usage cost during the retention operations at the end of the retention period.

Example

For the 91-day retention period, set Delete and re-create the repository on attach to every 13 weeks (91 days).

The purpose of enabling this option is to break the backup chain before it runs the retention on day 92 to keep the cost of your Wasabi storage to a minimum.
