Disk Backup Error

Product version: 11.0

Last modified: 12 February 2025

Problem

The physical machine backup job failed with the following error:

"error17 - description='An error has occurred while backing up one or more disks of the "thinlizzy" physical machine. reason=GENERIC_TRANSPORTER_ERROR ("Generic source disk failure (ActionException)").'

Background

This error occurs due to disk access or data transfer issues during the backup process. The failure may stem from:

  • Inaccessible or corrupted source disk

  • Insufficient permissions to read the disk

  • Transporter communication issues

  • Disk I/O errors or file system corruption

Solution

To resolve the issue, try the following steps.

  1. Ensure the physical disk has no hardware failures or file system corruption. Run appropriate disk-checking utilities:

    • On Windows use "chkdsk"

    • On Linux use "fsck"

  2. Confirm that the Transporter service is running and accessible. Restart the service if necessary.

  3. Ensure the Transporter has read/write access to the physical disk. Run the service with administrator privileges where applicable.

  4. Verify that all disks selected for backup are accessible. Deselect any problematic disks temporarily and re-run the job to isolate the issue.

  5. Ensure the latest software updates are applied. If necessary, update NAKIVO Backup and Replication to the latest version.

  6. Reboot the problematical physical machine.
