Backup Job Fails After VM Restore
Product version: 11.1
Last modified: 29 April 2026
Problem
A backup job fails for a virtual machine restored in Proxmox VE with the following error message:
Backup failed: "Proxmox VM UUID mismatch"
Background
After a VM is restored in Proxmox VE, it may receive a new SMBIOS UUID.
NAKIVO Backup & Replication uses this UUID to identify virtual machines and link them to existing backup chains. When the UUID changes:
-
The restored VM no longer matches the original backup chain
-
The system detects an identity mismatch
-
The job is blocked to prevent backup chain corruption
Solution
To resolve the issue, reconfigure the backup job and select the restored VM as a new source object.
-
Edit the backup job.
-
In the Source step, remove the original VM from the job.
-
Select the restored VM from the inventory.
-
Proceed through the job wizard and save the changes.
-
Run the backup job. The backup job completes successfully
A new backup chain is created for the restored VM. Existing backups remain unchanged and available for recovery.
